Are you thinking about becoming a Pilates teacher? It’s a beautiful journey, but one that deserves a solid start.
Let’s be honest: not all Pilates teacher training programs are created equally. In fact, some are structured in ways that may set you up for frustration, burnout, or worse… failure.
In this blog, I’m sharing the five biggest red flags to watch out for when choosing a Pilates certification program—so you can invest your time, energy, and resources wisely.
Red Flag #1: No Apparatus Training
If a program only teaches matwork, that’s your first red flag. While mat Pilates is a powerful foundation, it’s only a small part of the full method.

To be an effective teacher, you need to understand how to use the entire Pilates system—Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Barrel, and more. A high-quality training program will integrate all apparatus from the beginning, helping you confidently guide clients of all levels toward real transformation.
Red Flag #2: You’re Certified Too Fast
Becoming a skilled Pilates teacher takes time. If a program promises full certification in a weekend, a few weeks, or even just a couple of months—run.
True mastery requires a minimum of 450 hours of practice, study, observation, and teaching. At Anita Horry Academy, our comprehensive certification takes over 600 hours because we believe in preparing teachers for real-world challenges and long-term success—not just giving them a piece of paper.

Would you trust a pilot who trained for just a few weekends? Neither would we.
Red Flag #3: No Real Mentorship
You can’t become an impactful teacher by watching videos alone. Teaching Pilates is a hands-on, deeply embodied practice that requires real-time feedback and support.
You need a mentor who can guide you, challenge you, and help you grow. In our programs, we offer weekly live mentorship calls, real studio practice, case discussions, and a full year of support. Learning in community, with accountability and guidance, is where true confidence is built.
Red Flag #4: It’s Just a Business for Them
Some programs are created purely for profit. They upsell, box you into their brand, and give you little freedom to explore your own teaching path.
At Anita Horry Academy, we train independent thinkers. Whether you want to teach online, open your own studio, or travel to client homes—we support your vision. Your journey, your way. No scripts. No limitations.
Red Flag #5: Teaching Routines Instead of Reading Bodies
Cookie-cutter routines won’t create meaningful change in your clients. You must learn how to assess bodies, understand postural needs, and apply the method accordingly.
That’s why our training begins with postural analysis and integrates every piece of apparatus as a tool to create real, lasting results. We teach you how to work with the whole body, not just deliver memorized sequences.

What You Should Look For in a Great Pilates Certification:
- A minimum of 450 hours of study and practice
- Full apparatus training, integrated from the start
- Ongoing mentorship (ideally over 12 months)
- Live feedback and support, not just videos
- Guidance for real-world teaching and business success
