Introduction
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common in the fitness and Pilates industry. It can generate exercise ideas, structure workouts, and help organize programming in seconds.
Used correctly, AI can be a helpful tool. However, it should never replace the knowledge, observation, and professional judgment of a qualified teacher.
Here are some of the risks of relying on AI for exercise programming without the ability to evaluate what it recommends.
1. AI Does Not Truly Know Your Client

AI only knows the information it is given. It cannot fully understand a client’s movement history, abilities, limitations, goals, previous experiences, or how they are feeling on a particular day.
Two clients may appear similar on paper but require completely different approaches. One may need more support and preparation, while another may be ready for greater challenge or progression. Factors such as confidence, coordination, fatigue, movement habits, and individual responses to exercise can all influence how a session should be approached.
A qualified teacher can observe, ask questions, listen to feedback, and adapt the session based on what they see in front of them. AI can provide general suggestions, but it cannot replace the professional judgement that comes from working directly with a real person.
2. A Good-Looking Programme Is Not Always an Appropriate One

AI can produce a well-structured programme that sounds professional, logical, and convincing. However, a polished list of exercises does not guarantee that it is suitable for a specific individual.
A programme may look balanced on paper while still overlooking important details about the client’s movement, experience, current abilities, or needs. An exercise that is appropriate for one person may require modification or may not be suitable for another.
Teachers need enough knowledge to question recommendations, recognise potential concerns, and decide whether an exercise should be included, modified, progressed, regressed, or avoided. The ability to make these decisions requires more than following a programme. It requires understanding the person in front of you and the purpose behind every choice.
3. Programming Requires More Than Selecting Exercises

Effective programming is not simply about choosing a series of exercises and placing them in a particular order.
Teachers need to consider preparation, movement quality, progression, sequencing, client goals, and how each exercise connects to the next. They also need to think about how the session may need to change depending on the client’s response.
A good programme has intention behind it. Why is this exercise being used? What is the client preparing for? What needs to happen before progressing? Is the sequence helping the client move with greater control and understanding?
This level of decision-making comes from education, observation, critical thinking, and experience, not simply from copying an AI-generated response.
4. Professional Responsibility Still Belongs to the Teacher

The teacher remains responsible for selecting appropriate exercises, working within their scope of practice, making suitable modifications, monitoring the client’s response, and recognizing when something may not be appropriate.
This is why strong professional education matters. Teachers need the knowledge, confidence, and critical thinking skills to question the information they receive rather than accepting it automatically.
AI can be a useful tool, but it should support professional judgement, not replace it. The responsibility for the client and the quality of the session will always remain with the teacher.
Final Thoughts
AI can be a useful support tool, but it should never replace professional judgment.
As technology becomes more accessible, the need for knowledgeable and comprehensively trained teachers becomes even more important. The ability to observe, think critically, adapt, and make informed decisions will always be at the heart of responsible Pilates teaching.
At Anita Horry Academy, comprehensive teacher education focuses on developing more than knowledge of the exercises. Teachers build the understanding, practical skills, and professional judgment needed to make informed decisions for the individual in front of them.
