Choosing the right Pilates teacher training program is a pivotal step toward building a successful and fulfilling career in the wellness industry. With so many options available, it’s essential to know what truly sets a top-notch program apart. Below, I share key factors to consider—based on our own Comprehensive Pilates Teacher Training in Spain—to help you find the perfect match for your goals.
1. Comprehensive, Step-by-Step Curriculum
A thorough Pilates teacher training should take you from foundational knowledge to advanced techniques. Look for a program that:
- Offers a solid beginner-friendly foundation: Even if you’re brand new to Pilates, you should start with the basic principles before progressing into intermediate and advanced exercises.
- Covers 500+ hours of study: Ample training hours ensure you gain hands-on experience, time for self-practice, observation, and practice teaching.
- Teaches a broad repertoire: From Classical to Contemporary apparatus, plus small props, you want to leave feeling confident and versatile.
Pro tip: If you’re new to Pilates, see if the program has a dedicated Foundational Level (often starting in early spring). This is your best opportunity to learn correct movement patterns from the ground up.
2. Authentic Lineage & Expertise
Pilates lineage can significantly impact the quality of your training. Opt for:
- Teachers with direct connections to original Pilates masters: For instance, 3rd Generation Pilates Teachers trained by protégés of Joseph Pilates’ original students.
- An experienced Course Director: Mentors who have dedicated years to teaching and refining the art of Pilates, ensuring the method remains true to its roots.
- A recognized qualification: Graduating from a well-regarded, authentic program boosts your credibility as a new instructor.
3. Flexible Learning Formats
Your lifestyle, schedule, and learning preferences are crucial. Consider:
- In-Studio Training: Regular in-house tutorials, dedicated practice times, and group sessions.
- Retreat Format: If you value immersion and a change of scenery, a retreat offers a unique environment—complete with accommodation, daily transport, and extras like massage therapy and pool time.
- Online/Hybrid Supplements: Look for features like exercise video libraries, weekly group coaching calls, and a supportive online community to keep you accountable and motivated.
4. Supportive Community & Ongoing Mentorship
Learning Pilates is not just about memorizing exercises—it’s about personal growth and professional development. Ensure the program provides:
- A tight-knit cohort: Smaller groups mean more one-on-one attention, allowing your instructors to address your individual strengths and weaknesses.
- Weekly coaching calls: Stay connected with your peers and mentors between training sessions, ask questions, and reinforce your knowledge.
- International network: Engaging with trainees and teachers worldwide broadens your perspective and offers networking opportunities.
5. Business & Career Development
One common oversight in fitness education is the lack of business training. Seek a program that includes:
- Business modules: Learn how to market yourself, build clientele, and navigate the practical aspects of running a Pilates studio or working as a freelancer.
- Ongoing support: Accountability check-ins can help guide you through career transitions and the early stages of setting up your business.
6. Location, Studio Environment & Amenities
t’s essential to have consistent access to a well-equipped studio so you can practice in a professional setting. When comparing programs, ask:
- Is there dedicated studio space? Look for a course that provides ample time and opportunity to practice on-site. Having open studio hours where you can refine each exercise—and receive instructor feedback—ensures you gain real confidence in your teaching.
- Are the facilities fully stocked? A proper Pilates studio should have both classical and contemporary apparatus, plus various props to support different body types.
- Comfort & Convenience: If there is a retreat option, check whether it aligns with your preference. However, a standalone in-studio program can be just as effective—especially if you have flexibility to practice frequently without needing to travel or stay elsewhere.
7. Recognized Certificates & Clear Completion Criteria
Finally, always confirm what your certification entails:
- Hours Required: Do you know how many teaching, observation, and practice hours are needed?
- Assessments: A reputable program will include written and practical exams to ensure mastery of the material.
- Certificate of Achievement: Awarded upon completion of all required hours and successfully passing exams, so you can confidently begin teaching right away.

Bio: Anita Horry
Anita Horry’s Pilates journey began in 2004, sparked by a car accident that led her to explore Pilates for pain relief and rehabilitation. Her initial training with Universal Pilates in Spain, rooted in the Romana lineage of Power Pilates, set the foundation for her passion. In 2009, she introduced the classical Pilates method to Malta, further solidifying her role as a dedicated pioneer in the field.
Anita’s commitment to preserving and advancing the classical tradition led her to train with industry legends, including Lolita San Miguel, earning her the title of “Second Generation Master” in 2010. She later continued her education with Bob Liekens, who became a key mentor and approved her teacher training manuals. Anita’s expertise was further enriched through studies with revered classical Pilates teachers such as Kathi Ross Nash and the late Jay Grimes.
In 2018, Anita established the Anita Horry Academy, which offers a rigorous 600-hour comprehensive training pathway over 12 months—covering matwork, large apparatus, and essential workshops that uphold the precision and integrity of classical Pilates. Today, Anita is recognized internationally for her unwavering commitment to the classical Pilates method, sharing her knowledge at workshops and conferences, and inspiring the next generation of Pilates professionals to teach with confidence, authenticity, and respect for Joseph Pilates’ original system.
