Why this course matters

In today’s Pilates industry, history is often oversimplified, repeated without verification, or used as marketing without true understanding. For Pilates teachers, that creates confusion and weakens professional credibility.

This workshop helps you:

  • Speak accurately about Joseph Pilates and the Pilates Method in client consultations, teacher training, and professional settings
  • Understand lineage and legacy with confidence, especially when discussing Classical Pilates
  • Build a stronger professional identity rooted in education rather than trends
Strengthen exam readiness for Pilates certification standards where history and ethics are part of professional competency

What you will learn

  • A chronological understanding of Joseph Pilates’ life from Germany to New York
  • The key historical phases: childhood, World War I internment, return to Germany, immigration to the United States, and the New York studio era
  • The origins of Pilates equipment, including early Reformer concepts and the evolution of apparatus design
  • How Contrology became connected to dance, performance, and New York’s cultural institutions
  • How to distinguish between commonly repeated myths and what is supported by credible sources
  • What happened after Joe, including Clara’s role and the continuation of the method through the Elders
  • Why the term Classical Pilates matters and how it became part of modern professional language
