Contraindications Workshop

Musculoskeletal and Joint Considerations

A comprehensive workshop for Pilates instructors to confidently work with clients who have movement restrictions due to injuries, chronic conditions, or special considerations. Learn how to ensure safe, effective movement while respecting client limitations.

Many new teachers feel uncertain when working with clients who have injuries, chronic conditions, or other physical challenges. This workshop offers clear guidelines to help instructors navigate these situations with confidence, ensuring that movement remains the goal while prioritizing safety and client well-being.

The contraindications covered in this session are drawn from the original PMA handbook, as well as my own extensive experience over 20 years in the Pilates industry. My aim is to equip you with practical knowledge that will not only enhance your teaching but also help you prepare for the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP) exam.

About this course

This workshop is designed to provide Pilates teachers with a deeper understanding of contraindications and how to confidently work with clients who have movement restrictions. Pilates is fundamentally about restoring movement, yet many instructors and training programs adopt an overly cautious approach, avoiding movement altogether for certain conditions. My philosophy has always been to support individuals in reclaiming as much movement as they are capable of, while respecting their limitations and addressing any fears they may have.

Overview and Structure

This workshop is a condensed version of a full weekend training, carefully streamlined to focus on the most common contraindications Pilates teachers encounter in their practice. Delivered in a shortened video format, this workshop is designed to provide you with a deeper understanding of specific pathologies and physical conditions, including their symptoms, causes, and relevant contraindications for Pilates instruction.

Drawing on two decades of experience in the Pilates industry and a long-standing collaboration with the medical field, I bring a well-rounded perspective on how to approach movement safely and effectively for clients with special considerations. While I am not a medical professional, I hold a diploma in osteopathic massage and possess a deep understanding of human anatomy and movement. My role in this workshop is not to provide medical advice, but rather to highlight the importance of caution when working with certain populations, ensuring that Pilates remains both safe and effective.

If you are uncertain about any information provided in this workshop, I strongly encourage you to consult with a medical professional. Additionally, if your client has been given specific contraindications or movement recommendations by their physiotherapist, doctor, or other medical practitioner, it is imperative that you follow those instructions. Each condition can present with unique symptoms and movement restrictions, and it is essential to tailor your approach to each individual rather than applying generalized guidelines.
